Obituaries

H.R.J. ( Bob ) Bascombe died peacefully on 9th April, aged 93. The following obituary has been provided by his family.

Bob was born in Bath in 1930 and attended Bradfield College 1943 to 1948 in D House. While at Bradfield, Bob was part of many societies including Amis de Molieres, the Chronicle Committee and the Debating Society. Bob was an Exhibitioner and House Prefect and won the Denning Prize, Wilder Prize and Wanklyn French Prize. His time at Bradfield was followed by National service 1948/49 and then Lincoln College, Oxford 1950/53, where he read Law.

He had a very successful career with ICI, in Runcorn, Liverpool, and finally at Millbank in Westminster, rising to Personnel Manager. He took early retirement in 1985, and then enjoyed much travel, whilst also giving much of his time to various causes.

He was a Samaritan volunteer, a hospital driver, prison visitor and National Trust steward amongst many other committees and works.

Sadly he was twice widowed, but he leaves behind two sons, eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

He was a keen follower of events at the College, although all I remember him saying about his time at Bradfield was that the food was abysmal but the education superb!
