Working in the music industry since he left school Dan Stein, known professionally as DJ Fresh knows a thing or two about music. After rising to fame in the early 2010s with a string of dance hits, including the ultra-catchy Hot Right Now featuring Rita Ora and Golddust, Dan has spent the last few years not on the decks but digging into the machine learning algorithms of Artificial Intelligence technology. Spotting the impact which AI is likely to have on the industry, he has developed Voice-Swap, a business and community of over 180,000 people and a platform which offers a counterpoint to data scraping and deepfakes and provides a legal and ethical approach to voice modelling.

Voice-Swap is an AI voice modelling service launched in 2023 aimed at music producers. Its aim is to provide a framework for how AI technology can be used ethically within the music industry. Initially the service Dan offers was sold as a tool for creating demo tracks. However, Dan told MusicTech website in an interview that the “user cases have expanded to include translating songs into other languages, communication assistance for those with speech difficulties and even as a gimmick for influencers and podcasters looking to make interesting content.”

Today Voice-Swap allows anyone to transform their singing voice using AI. An exclusive roster of artists work in partnership with Voice-Swap, receiving royalties for the use of their AI voices. Every model is created using training data recorded from scratch specifically for Voice-Swap. They are now also partnered with one of the largest music rights attribution services BMAT (the music company that index all music usage and ownership data) to certify voice models.  Dan points out “Our partnership with BMAT helps us make sure that models are not just trained with copyright data. We very much believe that AI is to benefit humans, not the other way around, and the roots that we put down at the beginning of 2023 are now sprouting into partnerships that cement our ethos.”

Further enhancement of the business now includes a new ‘Stem-Swap’ feature to replace the voice on a track with one of Voice-Swap’s featured artists. It is then possible to download the stems of your track with the voice replaced – just like a real demo made in a studio – giving the ability to fine tune lyrics and melodies and find the perfect voice for a track.
