Our piece in the Bradfieldian magazine published in May 2023 about Squash at Bradfield connected to the visit of John Davison’s widow who left a legacy to the College, generated quite a lot of discussion around our request for sporting pictures.

We had a flurry of emails and letters in the post with photographs to share and in the words of Simon Lauder (G 51-56) “the Bradfieldian of May was of great interest and brought back such memories that I spent hours rummaging through my boxes in the attic.”

Simon remembers he and John Davison (E 54-59) playing several seasons of squash in London managed by Dennis Warnford-Davis (A 44-47) and thinks he even won the Warnford-Davis Cup at Bradfield more than once [in 1955 and 1956 from the Honours Board below].

Simon shared a 1956 photograph of his Squash team including: Graham Charles, Robert Farr at the back and Alan Wylie, Simon Launder and Antony Woof at the front.

Bruce Fairbairn (G 60-65) shared the Squash team photographs for 1964 and 1965 as did Chris Gorringe (E 59-64) who added the names and additional photographs for 1961 to 1963. William Prall (G 60-65) also helped to add some names to faces. Tony Spicer (H 59-64) remembers being 6'5" at school, although he says he has shrunk since then!

Stephen Farr (G 48-52) also added his pictures to the collection for 1950 to 1952 including players: Chaffer, Farr, Knight, Broad, Fetherstonhaugh, Wyatt, Wylie, Cadge and Parkinson.

Included in the photo gallery below many of the pictures we have received for our Archive and also the names on the Squash Honours Boards in the Bodie Squash Courts for everyone to enjoy.

In the words of Simon Lauder “Grateful and happy memories of great sports at Bradfield (and many years after)”.
