Old Bradfieldian Richard Benyon who attended the College in the seventies, is the former Conservative MP for Newbury, 2005-2019 and served a Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. He became a life peer in 2021, gazetted as Baron Benyon of Englefield in the Royal County of Berkshire. Sitting in the House of Lords as a Conservative peer until 10 Sept, 2024 he then switched affiliation and became a Crossbench peer. On 31st October it was announced that he had become the Lord Chamberlain.

The Lord Chamberlain of the Household is the most senior officer of the Royal Household of the United Kingdom, supervising the departments that support and provide advice to the Sovereign of the United Kingdom while also acting as the main channel of communication between the Sovereign and the House of Lords. The office organises all ceremonial activity such as garden parties, state visits, royal weddings, and the State Opening of Parliament. They also oversee the Royal Mews and Royal Travel, as well as the ceremony around the awarding of honours. 

The Headmaster has offered him congratulations on his appointment.
