We are very sad to hear of the recent passing on his 95th birthday of William Batty-Smith (B 42-47) on Saturday 30 March 2024 at home. Nigel said of his father that "He slowly passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by the family on Saturday afternoon, his 95th birthday. This is the way he wanted to go."

William was a keen supporter of Bradfield events attending the Centenary of the Armistice in 2018 at College and also the Tempus Fugit lunch with his two sons Nigel (B 76-80) and Mike (B 76-79). He comes from a long family connection with Bradfield of Batty-Smiths including Francis Clive Batty-Smith who was killed during World War on 4 June 1916 and whose battlefield cross we hold on behalf of the family at College. Clive was one of 8 members of the Batty-Smith family who have served in the forces over the years across 3 generations.

After a private family cremation, a Service of Remembrance is being planned at St Mary's Church, Stalbridge in Dorset DT10 2LR on Friday 10 May 2024 at 14:00 hours followed by a Wake at the Stalbridge British Legion. Everyone, however they were connected to William from his many years in the Middle East, his work as a District Councillor, locally in Stalbridge or as a former Malaya Sapper, is welcome to attend either or both to pay your respects. It is intended to be a celebration of the life of a remarkable man. The dress is smart casual or blazer, tie and medals for serving/veterans if preferred. The family have requested no flowers but donations can be made to either The British Red Cross or Team Endeavour, a Forces Family Charity.
If you are considering attending, please message Mike or Jules Batty-Smith so that numbers can be gauged via the Bradfield Society office.
