Martin Marix Evans (D 52-58) was born on Christmas Day in 1939 and passed away on 10 June 2020. During his time at Bradfield he was alongside his younger brother Robin.

After Bradfield, Martin studied at Wesleyan University in Connecticut, USA and Cambridge, where he graduated in Law before entering a career in publishing. He started first at Longmans with a summer job which lasted for 11 years, moving on to Pitman and then Frederick Warne, after which he established his own firm of book packagers in 1989. He was Chair of the Independent Publishers’ Guild from 1988 - 1990. A publishing colleague called him ‘a pillar of the book trade [who] will be sorely missed’.

Martin was the author of many books, mainly on military history. These included: guides to the D-Day operations, Ypres and Arnhem; Passchendaele and the Battles of Ypres 1914-18 and titles such as The Fall of France; Retreat, Hell! We just got here; Naseby 1645; The Boer War; The Defeat of Boudicca's Rebellion; A Terrible Beauty: An Illustrated History of Irish Battles; Forgotten Battlefronts of the First World War and many more. His books have been translated into many languages including German, French, Italian, Spanish, Flemish, Polish, Russian, Japanese and Dutch.

Together with Peter Burton and the late Mike Westerway, he founded the Naseby Battlefield Project and was a Trustee of the Battlefields Trust since 2003.

He leaves behind his wife Gillian, his daughters Louise and Polly, his sister Amina and five grandchildren.
